Jeff Soan’s articulated wooden creatures stopped me in my tracks at a recent craft fair at RHS Wisley.
They looked so smooth and tactile with engaging faces that really draw you in. On closer inspection the brilliance of the construction is extraordinary. The articulation really cleverly replicates the sinuous movements of each creature, I was especially drawn to the seal which brought back happy memories of the Farne Islands and Uist, I could just imagine it slipping in to the freezing cold ocean, although these little wooden guys didn’t have the singing voices of the ones in Islay.
The Duke of Edinburgh describes Jeff as a “ craftsman at the top of his game”- praise indeed but well-deserved. I’m sure the seal especially would make a more durable and attractive alternative to a stress ball.
